I’m testing a number of VPN providers out to get a feeling for speeds, connectivity reliability, and a few other criteria, one of which is encryption levels. I thought I’d share my connection log excerpts for anyone interested in the particular encryption levels used for these providers.

I tested all of them independent of any specialized connection application, just a straight OpenVPN gui program. I understand PIA (and maybe others) have custom levels of encryption available via their own programs, but these were based strictly off the openvpn config files provided to get a feel for what you could expect without regards to a particular OS.

Providers tested were AirVPNMullvadPIAEarthVPN and Proxy.sh. If anyone else has data for other providers, please share it!

Not surprisingly, AirVPN gets top marks here for AES-256 for data & 2048 bit RSA keys.

Proxy.sh and PIA opt for 128 bit Blowfish for data, 1024 bit RSA keys.

Mullvad sticks with 128 bit Blowfish for data, but uses 2048 bit RSA keys.

EarthVPN uses AES-128 and 2048 bit RSA keys.
